Before any grinding, SafeWork NSW's code of practice requires a site assessment to locate every underground service, and it names stump grinders among the machines that can strike them. Where the grind will go deeper than 200 millimetres, or anyone is unsure, the provider should check through Before You Dig Australia, a free service on 1100 that sends plans of underground assets. It tells people to chase the asset owner if plans haven't arrived within two business days, so allow for that when booking.

What to tell the provider

Mention anything you know is buried near the tree: a tank, a pipe, a cable, an old path or a footing. SafeWork NSW asks owners to warn contractors about exactly these, and the code warns that loose stones, pipe, metal and concrete near a stump can be thrown out by the wheel. Say too if the stump was ever poisoned, because the code calls for protective equipment against dust and chemicals on those. On the day, keep children and pets well back from the barrier.

Settle what happens to the grindings and roots in the quote. Central Coast Council's tip charges $197.78 a tonne for garden organics in 2026-27, but takes a stump bigger than a cubic metre only as special waste, at $613.30 a tonne, about three times as much. Small pieces can go out in a free bulk kerbside collection if they are no wider than 30 centimetres, and the hole left behind needs filling or marking so nobody trips in it.
