The SES gives temporary help to make a home safe, and leaves permanent repairs and the remaining debris to your insurer or a private contractor. Whose tree is it?

If a neighbour's tree came down, Legal Aid NSW says the neighbour is responsible only if they knew, or should have known, it was dangerous, and suggests checking your insurance policy. A tree left dead, or with an obvious structural failure, may come out under Council's exemptions, but the landowner keeps an arborist's written record for six months unless an emergency service authorised the work.

Storms bring door-knockers, and the NSW Government's warning signs fit tree work closely: someone who turns up unannounced with a today-only deal, asks for cash up front or offers to drive you to the bank. An agreement struck on your doorstep for more than $100 comes with 10 business days to cancel, and the trader may take no payment and do no work in that time. That protection doesn't cover a job you go looking for yourself, including one arranged through this site.
