Tree Removal in Umina Beach

Umina Coastal Sandplain Woodland, an endangered community dominated by bangalay and rough-barked apple, survives at Umina Oval and McEvoy Oval, and Council's permit exemptions do not cover a tree that is part of an endangered ecological community.

Tree Removal around Umina Beach
The State's scientific committee lists the woodland as endangered and records it at Umina Oval, McEvoy Oval and Umina High School, with a tiny remnant at Little Patonga Beach, and Council is rehabilitating its largest fragments, two of them the ovals in Umina Beach. A single old bangalay in a backyard is not automatically part of the community. Whether it is falls to Council or an ecologist to judge, not a website, so ask before an exemption is relied on for that kind of tree.
Brisbane Water National Park also reaches into the suburb. A tree standing on the park side of a boundary is not the neighbouring owner's to cut, and the Rural Fire Service's 10/50 clearing rule leaves out national park land, as it does land within 100 metres of the coastline or an estuary. The online tool gives the answer for your own lot on the day, so check it rather than going by a neighbour's result.
Permits and Central Coast Council rules
For an Umina Beach tree 3 metres or taller, Council's permit is the starting point unless an exemption fits. The exemptions for dead trees, trees within 3 metres of an approved house and light pruning all fall away if the tree is a threatened species, a habitat tree for threatened fauna, or part of an endangered ecological community. With the woodland this close, that last carve-out is the one to rule out first.
